Brooke Tigh had me at bunghole.

No really. I went to take her Studio Barre class & she had me laughing while I was in a happy baby ( AKA ‘spread eagle’ ) pose. She was just checking to make sure ‘our bungholes were facing the mirror.’ HA!

I was hooked to her sense of humor + her amazing class. Every Friday at noon you can find me tucking away with Brooke. She’s a real gem. Read on, lovaz. You’ll fall in love with her too!

+ Tell us about yourself.

Brooke Tigh: I’m graceful, strong, and coordinated-yet still somehow very accident prone.

I’m energetic, confident and silly-but when it’s time to wind down, I’ve been known to turn into a “womouch” ( part woman, part couch ). Even though I love to joke around, I CAN be serious and focused. It’s all about balance.

Teaching fitness and living a healthy, active lifestyle is my passion! A perfect day consists of: Studio Barre, yoga, lunch with friends ( & adult beverages ), massage, nap, dog park w/ my pup, more adult beverages, delicious dinner, dance party ( duh ), a nice sleep in my glorious cal king ‘cloud bed!’

+ Why is Studio Barre amazing?

BT: Studio Barre is so fantabulous ( yes that’s a word- cause I said so! ) because not only is it a kick ass workout that will literally change the shape of your body for the better…but it’s a place to come and be surrounded by glorious people & great energy. There’s something magical that happens when you walk into the doors of Studio Barre; you smile, you laugh, you bond with all the other ( mostly women ) ‘tucker’s.’ Everybody is so supportive of one another, there’s no cattiness or bitchy-ness like other boutique style studios sometimes have.

+ Favie Studio Barre move?

BT: Why, the ‘tuck’ of course! What is a ‘tuck’, you ask? It’s simple. Just squeeze your bootie & pull your belly button in to your spine. It’s like a little air hump. It tightens everything from your ass all the way up & goes through your entire core. It lengthens your low back, while strengthening your belly muscles. As we say, “keep calm and tuck on!”

I’m also a big fan of our ‘cardio snack’, which happens about halfway into class, gets your heart pumping, & helps you find your last push of energy to take it to the end of class.

+ Quick skinny tips?

BT: To slim down, cut out booze, refined sugar, & carbs. I know, it sounds freaking terrible. But you will see a change in like a week, I swear! Try & do this for two full weeks to see the most difference. Or if you can’t tone it, tan it! Get a spray tan & you may possibly look five pounds lighter!

Put on those stilettos, girl. The higher the better for long, lean, luxurious legs!!! Also, invest in Spanx. You will be amazed!

+ Weekly workout schedule?

BT: Right now, I’m on the books to teach three yoga classes & nine Studio Barre classes a week…& I usually sub a few classes on top of that.

Since my voice is pretty much the only thing that gets a workout while teaching, I like to kick my own ass in these ways:

- At least three Studio Barre classes…

- At least three yoga classes…

BT: I’m the worst at cardio! It has to be disguised for me in classes like Zumba, Cardio Dance, & Step. I usually go to Frog’s Gym in Encinitas. Also, I have a Labradoodle named Piper who has tons of energy, so lots of walks with her count as part of my routine!

+ Favorite go-to healthy food?

BT: I try to always have a Larabar with me…cashew cookie and peanut butter cookie are my faves. An organic banana with some crunchy, unsalted almond butter & organic, raw trail mix= life saver!

+ Cocktail of choice?

BT: Kettle One vodka & water ( not soda water ) with three lemon slices. Delicious & refreshing!

+ Motivation to stay in shape?

BT: I’ve always been active through dance, sports, & working out. I’m motivated by the simple fact that I know for sure that I’m going to feel better afterwards. If that’s not enough, living in San Diego & embracing the beach lifestyle requires a shorts, tank top, & a bikini ready body during all seasons!

+ World’s best beauty product?

BT: My Clarisonic Sonic skin cleansing brush & facial dermaplane treatments. This magical combo makes your skin super über soft, so that all your products go on fabulously!

+ Natural beauty remedy that you do?

- Lots of naps, sex, and wine!

- If you’re rested, you’re not cranky- & that’s beautiful!

- If you have a lot of sex-you have that glow ( it’s scientifically proven, people! )…& that’s beautiful!

- If you drink enough wine, not only are you getting those powerful antioxidants, you’re not stressed out…& that’s beautiful!

+ Quick, easy recipe?

“Beanwah” ( beans+quinoa )

1 cup tri color quinoa

2 cups low sodium vegetable stock

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon red or yellow curry sauce ( or any yummy flavorful sauce you have )

1 big handful of raw kale ( they sell it in bags all cut and trimmed, way easier than buying the whole stalk & doing it yourself )

Organic black beans ( canned & whole is fine-I get mine at Trader Joe’s )

+ Directions: Put all ingredients except for beans in a rice cooker. Be sure to rinse your quinoa, it has a bitter outer shell that’s no bueno. Once cooked, fluff rice cooker stuff w/ a fork. Heat beans ( nuke ‘em in the micro! ). Mix together, salt and pepper to taste, and WALA! BEANWAH!

* Sauteed tempeh or tofu is a good add-on, or some freshly steamed veggies too!

Skinnista of the Month: Bride To Be Lisa Hendrix

Meet my pretty, pretty, pretty friend, Lisa Hendrix [ note: pretty inside and out ]. She’s a total babe & a definite 10. But sorry {!!!} boys- get your mind out of the gutter— she’s taken ; )! Below we discuss how Lisa is working her butt off & eating clean for her upcoming nuptials. This girl also knows a thing or two about how to whip up a skinny omelette. Rusty, her fiancé, is one lucky guy:

+ Tell us allllllll about your wedding & how you’re going to get into tip-top shape:

Lisa Hendrix: We are getting married in La Jolla in early October…I truly can NOT wait for the day to finally get here. Planning the wedding has been an unbelievable amount of work & I can not wait to just enjoy the day with all of my friends and family, finally be able to call Rusty my HUSBAND, & last but not least…go on our honeymoon!!!

Thankfully, I had already had a pretty steady workout routine before we got engaged, so I haven’t felt a ton of pressure to ‘lose weight.’ However, I’d like to feel my best on our big day, so of course I am extra motivated. I plan to lengthen my runs, keep attending my yoga classes, do at home workouts when time permits, & start attending Bikram yoga classes as well.

+ If you’re going to flaunt, what body part is most flattering in a LBD?

LH: I have always felt comfortable flaunting my shoulders, arms, & my butt ; ). A little bit of work to tone my arms goes a long way, & they’re almost always an appropriate body part to bare.

+ Favorite trends this season?

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE wearing white- any fabric is better in white! White has been everywhere this spring/summer. White dresses, white tops, white shorts…I love it all. Needless to say, I am excited to finally wear my favorite color to a wedding.

+ Natural beauty product you swear by?

LH: I always try to prioritize a good nights sleep! I like to get a minimum of eight hours a night, if I am able to get nine or ten, even better! Getting an extra hour or two of sleep is so much more beneficial than staying up late to watch TV. I’ve also been known to wash my face excessively, but I’ve really found that simply washing my face anytime it feels dirty, has really helped to maintain good skin. It sounds so simple, but many people forget. The first thing I do after every workout is wash my face. I even bring a travel size face wash to the gym. And always apply a moisturizer afterward.

Another quick fix to looking & feeling more beautiful [ in the summer ] is swimming in the ocean! It works wonders on your skin and will make you look and feel refreshed the rest of the day : ).

+ Quick skinny tip?

LH: #1…don’t stress about being ‘skinny’! And if I do start having a ‘not-so-skinny’ moment, I put on my running shoes & go! I also make sure to eat a smaller dinner before 6 pm, & TRY to cut down on the salt [ very difficult for me, but it works! ]. By the next day I will feel great again.

Weekly workout?

LH: I was never very athletic in high school, so feeling the difference of finally being active six or even seven days a week is unbelievable. Through college, I started becoming gradually more active; jogging, a yoga class here & there, etc. It wasn’t until a little over two years ago I really started prioritizing my workouts; it has changed my life. I have more energy, I eat when I am hungry & never obsess over food/how much I eat, I feel more balanced & happy, but most importantly I’m completely confident/happy in my body.

I run about six days a week, usually about thirty minutes; whatever I feel is best for me on that particular day. And I absolutely swear by yoga. I try to take classes as much as possible. With my schedule I can usually fit it in two to three times a week. It’s beneficial in so many ways, & completely changes your body. I also like to squeeze in a spin classes &/or at home abdominal workouts when I have the time.

+ Favorite healthy snack?

LH: Organically grown, frozen grapes! I also love tomatoes with a slice of baby mozarella. I’m a believer in satisfying cravings…but doing so in MODERATION! It’s so much more important to stay away from ‘fake foods’ & chemicals, then to avoid calories & fat, just make sure you’re getting your fat/calories from the right place! Spend the extra money  & buy organic; it’s so worth it in the long run. However, I can’t stay away from my french fries, so I get them from In-N-Out ; ).

+ Cocktail of choice?

LH: Vodka, soda water w/ a slice of lemon & lime!

+ Pick five things essentials for summer:

+ Neutrogena SPF 50

+ This White Dress

+ Tory Burch Emmy Gold Sandals

+ This Black Bikini

+ J Brand White Shorts [ only a few left in stock! ]

+ Quick, easy recipe:

++ Lisa’s Egg White Omelette:

+ 2 tablespoons of salsa

+ Handful of spinach

+ Sliced mushroom

+ Chopped green onions

+ A few slices of avocado

Perfect for breaky, lunch or dinner. I usually include a pice of whole grain toast, especially if I am eating before a workout. It’s quick, easy, filling, & most importantly, you really can’t mess it up.

Spray Tan Yourself Skinny

Spray tanning is one of those things that can turn out absolutely amazing & provide a slimming effect or it’s a shit show & you end up resembling an Oompa-Loompa. It is an unbelievable solution for when I want to give off the illusion that I “dropped” a cool five pounds. Depending on the season I average about three tans a month at Tan @ the Islands. Also, I never use the tanning beds because no one wants wrinkles or skin cancer!

Tips for a Successful Spray Tan: 

+ Always make sure the tanning product is by Versa Spa or Mystic Tan.

+ Exfoliate/shower [ shave, loofah and scrub your face & neck [[ the Clarisonic is fab for this]] ] pre-tan. SHAVE too.

+ Remove all lotions, make-up, & jewelry before the tan.

+ Use the barrier cream on the insides of the hands.

+ Slap on Sticky Feet to protect the bottoms of the feet.

+ When spraying is complete: wash hands, wipe off your feetsies, & pat the rest of the body dry with two towels.

+ The neck area needs extra patting.

+ Keep the spray tan solution on for at least six to seven hours before a shower.

+ Do not wear white clothing after the tan.

P.S. Always get a mani afterwards, not before. The tanning solution ruins it. Get a pedicure on an entirely different day.
